Saturday's UFC card, UFC on Fuel TV: Silva vs Stann, was a highly anticipated card, main evented with the legendary Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva vs the American Hero Brian "The All American" Stann. This card was presented on Fuel TV and on ESPN oversees. Though it featured a total of 11 bouts, 5 on Facebook and Youtube and 6 on the main card, the only two fights worth watching were the last two. Now, let's check out the matches starting with the Preliminary fights.
Preliminary Card on Facebook/Youtube
Hyun Gyu Lim vs Marcelo Guimaraes
The night on Facebook and Youtube kicked off with two young fighters Hyun Gyu Lim and Marcelo Guimaraes facing off in the UFC's Welterweight Division. This fight was pretty boring due to Hyun Gyu Lim constantly trying to set up a knee-knockout combination and Marcelo mounting very little offense during the entire match. Thankfully this match finally ended in the second round at 4:00 due to KO by way of knee and punches, with the winner being Hyun Gyu Lim. My analysis on this bout is that neither of these guys are quite ready for the main card. I rate this match 0.5/5 stars.
Alex Caceres vs Kyung Ho Kang
The night picked up slightly with the two energetic bantamweight's Alex Caceres and Kyung Ho Kang squaring off. This was a pretty even matchup with both men getting in some strikes as well as working their ground game. The sauve Caceres showed why he belongs on the main card by maintaining a smile throught the match and eventually winning by split decision, 28-9, 29-28, 29-29. My analysis on this bout is that both are raw skilled fighters that are soon to be ready for the main card, and I see a main eventer in Alex Caceres. I rate this match 2.5/5 stars.
Kazuki Tokudome vs Cristiano Marcello
The next fight was basically a one-sided slaughter. It featured the young Kazuki Tokudome and the wiley veteran Cristiano Marcello in a lightweight fight. This match saw the BJJ master Marcello on his back for most of the fight, completely neutralized. Though Marcello mounted some occasional offense, it was few and far between. Tokudome won this match my unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27. My analysis is that whereas Marcello at one point in time was featured on the main card, he belongs in the preliminary card and probably has already peaked. I rate this match 2.0/5 stars.
Takeya Mizugaki vs Bryan Caraway
Next up was a Bantamweight fight involving Takeya Mizugaki and Bryan Caraway. Both fighters went back and forth and put on a mediocre display, but nothing was too memorable. Takeya Mizugaki won by a split decision, 29-28, 28-29, 29-28. My analysis of this fight is that this was a bathroom break. I rate this match 1.5/5 stars.
Brad Tavares vs Riki Fukuda
The final fight on this horacious undercard was a middelweight fight between Brad Tavares and Riki Fukada. This surely picked up the pace of the night, with Brad mounting decent offense, but being unable to put Fukuda away. Brad won by unanimous decision, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27. My analsyis of the fight, thank god the undercard is over. I rate this match 2.0/5 stars.
Main Card on Fuel TV
Dong Hyun Kim vs Siyar Bahadurzada
The main card started off with a Welterweight bout between Kong Kyun Kim and Siyar Hahadurzada. This fight was semi-slow paced with Dong mouting some offense utilizing his legs and some grappling and Siyar staying mostly on the receiving end of the fight. Dong Kyun Kim won by unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27. My analysis of the fight, Dong Kyun Kim needs to gain some more confidence and then he'll be a serious contender for the Welterweight belt. I rate this match 2.5/5 stars.
Rani Yahya vs Mizuto Hirota
Next up was featherweight's Rani Yahya and Mizuto Hirota. They both traded some strikes and had some submission attempts, but this was a rather dry match. Eventually Rani won by unanimous decision, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28. My analysis of the fight is that this fight would have worked fine on the Preliminary Card. I rate this match 2.0/5 stars.
Yushin Okami vs Hector Lombard
Yushin Okami and Hector Lombard's Middleweight fight started the action of the night. Lombard started displaying som explosive punches, but eventually Yushin used some Muay Thai clinches and grounded Hector to neutralize him for much of the first and second round. The third round saw a few awesome punches by Lombard, but instad of capitalizing he found himself looking like a fish out of water, trying to put Yushin away on the ground. Yushin won via split decision, 28-29, 29-28,29-28. My analysis of the fight is that I'd love to see a rematch, Lombard showed some real striking power, but he needed to use it more. I rate this match 3.5/5 stars.
Diego Sanchez vs Takanori Gomi
Proceeding the last fight, Diego Sanchez and Takanori Gomi's 158lb catchweight fight just seems unmemorable. This fight was very back and forth with Diego getting in a few extra kicks and strikes and some mild ground action. Sanchez won by split decision, 29-28, 28-29, 29-28. My analysis of the fight is that this was the potty break for the main card. I rate this match 2.5/5 stars.
Mark Hunt vs Stefan Struve
In their heavyweight fight, Stefan Struve and Mark Hunt brought it. This fight saw some hard back and forth punches and a little ground and pound by both men. Stefan was utilizing his side and keeping out of range of Hunt, neutralizing his power and dominating the first two rounds, but the tide changed in the third round. Hunt started to unload alot in the third round, eventually setting up a hard left hook which sent Struve down, gaining the TKO win via punches in the 3rd round at 1:44. My analysis is that Hunt has now established himself as a Heavyweight Title contentender and with a little help from Abel Carv on striking, Hunt should be a future UFC champion. I rate this match 4.0/5 stars.
Wanderlei Silva vs Brian Stann
The main event was a must see! It featured punches, some ground and pound and some testicular shots. Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva was an idol of Brian "The All American" Stann, and one of the reasons he go into the sport. That being so, Brian wanted to give Wanderlei the fight of his life while returning to Japan, the nation where Silva became famous. Brian was also born in Japan, which lead to the crowd being torn on who to cheer for. The first round started off fast, with some back and forth striking, but was temporarily cooled down when Brian Stann's foot accidently found Silva's testicles. A quick masturbatin session later, the match reconveined with more strikes and some ground work. The round came to a close with a thunderous back and forth slug-fest. The second round picked up right where the last one left off, but was temporarily halted by another kick to the gonad's. Following his second jerk off session of the match, Silva made Brian pay for it with a miniture slugfest followed by a right punch combination that ultimately knocked Brian Stan out, resulting in a victory for Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva via knockout by way of punches. My analysis is that this match stole the show and a rematch would be great, though Wanderlei's ability to produce children in the future is questionable. I rate this match a full 5/5 stars.
This card featured some good and some bad, but the last two matches more than made up for the bout's that were slacking. I hope some of these fights are rematched, and I look forward to seeing more action out of Lombard, Silva, Hunt, and Stann. What do you think?
