How to Be a Dominate Ring GirlBy: "The Shaman of Sexxxy" Abel J. G. "Auggie" CarvIn the world of MMA, Ring Girl's are a very public liaison between the promotion and the fans. Like true models, they are necessary to help "sell" the product and keep the show progressing. The way that ring girl's portray themselves and are utilized varies from show to show, but having competed, worked, and been in live attendance of dozens of live shows, I've noticed some very specific qualities that some ring girl's have that have made shows great, and some that have detracted from the show. Know the SportIn all modeling, to be effective you should know your product. At least half of promotions have the ring girls situated next to the media during the actual bout's. A ring girl should be able to carry a conversation with the media about what's transpiring in the cage. Nobody wants to talk to someone about a fight and hear a response, "I don't know, I'm just hear to hold the cards." I'm not, by any means, saying that a ring girl needs to be an MMA encyclopedia, but at minimum have enough interest in the sport to be able to talk about it. Us fighters put our body through great pain, spend countless hours studying and training, and even to a certain extent risk our lives in the cage, so do not disrespect us by coming participating in our shows being clueless.
Have RespectAt many shows I've been to, the ring girl's had a false sense of being the spotlight. Please do not have this attitude. How many ring girl's have the risk of getting hurt entering the cage? How many ring girl's main event shows? How many tickets are sold based off the ring girls alone? The answer to these questions is few to none. We, the fighters are the ones at risk, we should have the fame and glory, not the ring girls. We should get the best accommodations as we're going to be leaving in pain, not the girls. We also are the stars, not the ring girls, but we still do appreciate when the ring girls make us look better.
You're a Role-Model as well as a Model, Act Like OneWhether they like it or not, ring girls are role models. Often the younger women and girls in the fan want to be like them or any other model actually. They should act like one. Constantly cussing is not cool. Showing excessive cleavage is not ok, people are paying to watch fights, not have a "hooter experience". The genital and anal regions are also not ok to be displayed, but some promotions not only allow this, but encourage it by providing extra revealing outfits. It's also not okay to make up or engage in sexual activity while working. A ring girl may be the significant other to a competitor, but the audience may not know that and may misinterpret any "celebratory actions" as "rewarding the victor".
Look and Act the PartDespite myth, there is no specific size for a ring girl. There are good thin ring girls, there are good plus-sized ring girls. There are good short ring girls, there are good tall ring girls. Despite this, ring girl's should compliment the show. A ring girl should look healthy and be comfortable for her size, this is especially important as health and weight-control are important aspects of MMA. This doesn't mean a ring girl should look like a professional bodybuilder, as very few want to watch a fight where the girl holding up the card walking around the ring appears like she can kick both competitors' asses.A ring girl should also be a good show, they should be lively walking around the ring, not appear bored or confused. They are there to get the crowd on their feet, not to look cute, be sex-objects, etc.
In essence, there is no specific formula for being a ring girl, but it is an art within the broad art of modeling. Many try to be ring girls, and often times promoters are so lazy and disrespectful to the sport that they just let random girls be ring girls. This is not ok. What do you think? How was this article?
