Andy Winchester-Bennett, Heavy to Healthy
By: Abel CarvThree years ago, in the United Kingdom was a tubby man, who was pretty sure that he’d be dead by the age of 30; fast-forward to the present, Andy Winchester-Bennett is a few days away from competing in Cage control - Contenders 2. In those three short years, the Winchester has racked up a 3-1 pro 1-1 amateur MMA record, keeping him on pace to achieve his five year goal of racking up a few ICO titles and have another chance to compete at BAMMA. The once lard-laden man now has a very serious regimen as he elaborate, “Depending on the weight im fighting, but we like to work a lot on kicking as thats always been my Forté, but a general day for my upcoming fight has been.. wake up, 3 mile HIIT sprints, eat some oats, head down to the gym, hit some pads, jump in the ring for some sharktank sparring, then a 15 minute run at 12 mph, then down to BJJ classes. Sometimes I finish the day with a swim to help the cuts.” Listing BJ Penn, Bones, and GSP as his favorite fighters, Andy is on the road to achieving what they have. “At first it was just for the fitness bein a 325 lbs guy, i needed any sport to help, then it got pretty serious once i realised i had some potential in it,” elaborated Andy when asked how he got into the sport. Now he walks around at a healthy 186lbs for his above-average 6ft 3 inches frame. Truly we can expect great things from this inspirational man, and his fight on Saturday the 2ndof March will be one worth watching. Last year for a 6 month period or something, Once a week i would hold my breath underwater and see how long i can last, one time i did it till i got a nosebleed! never did it since! Are there any fighters/promoters that you would never work with again? Who? Why? I can honestly say ive never had a bad experience with promotors! but ive avoided a few! What was your worst experience in the sport? Being choked out when i got tunnel vission on some ground and pound, got caught in a triangle and it was lights out! What advice would you give to those new in the industry? Id suggest you knuckle down and train hard! ive seen a lot of guys fall at the first hurdle because of bad prep work! Anything else you would like the world to know? Dont drink and drive kids. What was the best win you’ve gotten? Best was a win via decision after a 3 round war! it was a mess as we were both hitting hard. The releif on the final buzzer was incredible. What was the worst defeat in your career? Being caught in a triangle very early, i didnt work my ground enough in training and learned a valuable lesson. |
